Dame Mary Peters launches Children’s MRI Scanner Appeal

Friday, June 18th, 2010

Dame Mary Peters and the Right Hon. Lord Mayor Pat Convery, join Mark Agnew and his children Samuel and Annie. Samuel has a heart condition and had to travel to Dublin twice for an MRI Scan. Hopefully in the future, with the success of this appeal he will be able to have scans in RBHSC in a child friendly environment and with familiar faces around him.

Dame Mary Peters launches Children’s MRI Scanner Appeal

Dame Mary Peters joined the Lord Mayor Pat Convery to launch the “Children’s MRI Scanner Appeal” for a Magnetic Resonance Imaging facility dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of sick and injured children in Northern Ireland.

The Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children is the only children’s hospital in the UK not to have an MRI Scanner. Without a dedicated children’s MRI Scanner, many children in Northern Ireland who would benefit from an MRI Scan are unable to have one. Instead, these children undergo different types of investigation that can be invasive or involve radiation, and may even have to travel outside of Northern Ireland for a scan.

Four leading local children’s charities have joined forces in an appeal to raise £2,000,000 for the ‘Children’s MRI Scanner Appeal’ for The Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children. The appeal brings together the Northern Ireland Children’s Cancer Unit, Carrickmannon MRI Scanner Appeal (Children’s), Children’s Heartbeat Trust and Helping Hand in a drive to raise funds through the public and business communities.

Dr Louise Sweeney, Consultant Paediatric Radiographer at the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children, commented “We are very thankful to these charities for launching this appeal for a dedicated children’s MRI Scanner. This scanner will benefit sick or injured children from all over Northern Ireland, allowing us to provide an enhanced service with early diagnosis and treatment by staff trained in the care of children and in a child-friendly environment”

Nigel Kearney from the charity Helping Hand said “We are appealing to the public and business communities of Northern Ireland to help us raise £2,000,000 for this childrens MRI Scanner. Everyone can get involved, from a family event to corporate sponsorship – every single penny will help us ensure that sick children in Northern Ireland receive the best and safest treatment available”.
